Water lilies

Water lilies

The water lilies seem to have settled in their new home. I’ve got three blooms at the same time now, makes me really happy – especially that these blooms are an affirmation that they didn’t suffer to much from the abuse I subjected their plant to when I decided to move it.

Have a wonderful Friday my friends.

Building the orchid wall

I bought quite a few orchids from the Thai stall in the recent Bahrain Int’l Garden Show, but as I was rather busy and had a trip abroad, I didn’t have a chance to do anything with them other than hang them on the light fittings in my study and leave some on the floor.

In the interim, I obviously gave them much thought as how to best display them and thought that it might be best hanging from a wall or a trellis. I had a really complicated design in mind with jute sacks and misting systems, but in the end, I opted for a very simple idea. Just a simple right-angle trellis and stand it at the entrance to my study!

I went to Manazil this morning and bought these wrought iron trellises, one is 7 foot while the other is 6 foot. I stood them next to each other and tied them together with tie-wraps to create a middle hinge. That worked fine, so the next thing to do is to actually arrange the flowers.

I hope you will see the end result from the next couple of pictures.

Have a wonderful Friday and weekend my friends.

Frances and I are just back from the Garden Show, and these babies are her present to me for my birthday tomorrow. I don’t care very much for the birthday as taking care of these over the next few months… I’ve got plans!! :D

Have a wonderful weekend my friends!

My lawn is looking like the Serengeti in winter, burnt. That makes the garden a bit dull, especially that most plants didn’t start flowering again. Like me, they’re desperately waiting for the Spring again.

Yet, the birds we feed (parakeets, mynahs, sparrows, bulbuls, pigeons, doves, etc.) spread the seed which sometimes seem to be purposefully placed to add some interest and colour where it is most needed!

Have a wonderful day my friends.

Calendula

The Calendulas have started to flower around the “English Border”. They’re the first to bloom and of course it is a thrill to witness this considering I planted and cared for them from seed through to this.

There are many more flowers to come up in that part of the garden and am looking forward to enjoy their company over the next few weeks.

Have a wonderful Friday my friends.

Hanging baskets

This is the first time I try my hands at hanging baskets.

I bought 4 large ceramic hanging baskets from Al-Sultan Garden Centre in Khobar a while ago and they’ve been staring at me in the shed since. I finally got the chance to coax them off the shelf and onto brackets in the weekend (Sat, 8 Dec, ’07). With the help of my daughter Hanan, we installed four brackets on the walls of the house by the pool and hung the pots. They look quite funky: yellow, orange, white and white.

Once installed, I planted the following seeds in individual pots and am hoping for the best:

As I had a few Nasturtiums and Freesias left over, I planted them in two independent pots which I placed on the front porch. The left-over Nasturtiums I planted in the front-door planter.

I’m looking forward to once again eat the spicy Nasturtium flowers!

The second stalk

While I was super busy last week, the Hippaestrum’s sprouted another stalk and has five heads, the fifth is a mutant and I don’t think it will open; however, as you can see, the other four more than compensate!

Have a wonderful day…
